(Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Curate the Entire Musical Identity of These Isles)

Let’s get one thing straight—this is not just a “best of British” list. This is a carefully curated, gloriously biased, occasionally emotional journey through music from the British Isles. And yes, there are rules. Because otherwise, it’d be chaos. And I’d be getting daily DMs asking why [insert massively overplayed song] isn’t on here.

So here they are:

Rule 1: The lyrics must be in English

Not because I don’t adore music in other languages—trust me, I do. But this playlist supports English language learning (it’s part of my podcast, after all), so we need words learners can, you know, learn from.

Rule 2: The song must contain actual lyrical content

Songs with only five words on repeat? Probably not making the cut. I’m looking for lyrical richness, storytelling, wordplay, emotional nuance—something that lets me talk about the language, not just hit “loop” and hope for the best.

Rule 3: The artist must be from the British Isles

That includes Scotland, England, Ireland, and Wales. Either born there or strongly identifying as being from there—this isn’t a border control situation, but the geography matters.

Rule 4: I’m 45.

So yes, I’ve heard that one. If it was a huge single between 1965 and 2005 and it’s been played at every wedding reception since… I probably danced to it once and have no need to ever hear it again. (This doesn’t mean no classics—but we’re not doing nostalgia radio.)

Rule 5: I favour vocal talent

This isn’t exclusively about powerhouse singers—but let’s be honest: I like artists who can actually sing. If your favourite entry relies entirely on production tricks and autotune, it’s probably not here (unless it was funny or meaningful enough to break Rule 5. There are loopholes).
